On 18th August 2024, I started my 6-day hiking adventure and It was monsoon season. However, I got back from my journey after 10 days. During this adventure, I faced several critical situations mostly because of monsoon season. I shared a 10-minute video about Mariyan Tong and Moyta Tem Hiking and Camping on my YouTube channel. Now I think you should be aware of what I experienced so that you can be prepared. That’s why I decided to write monsoon hiking and camping tips.
If you are willing to go hiking and camping on the mountain during the monsoon season, read the article and watch my blog.
Make sure your items are safe from rain
The first priority should be to keep your essentials safe from water. You can use a waterproof BackPack, Cover and take an Umbrella. As everyone knows about this, I’m not writing more.
Give Some Time to Your Body to Adjust your Breathing
When I started hiking to the mountain, I felt very tired but after some time my body adjusted to the new situation. Walk slowly, take rest when needed, try not to sit, and don’t force your body.
Be Prepared for Delay of your hiking
If you are hiking during monsoon season, you have to count extra time. You know that mountainous road conditions won’t be good for hiking during monsoon. In some cases, you have to wait until rain stops and if you think you can hike during the rain, you should go slow. So overall you have to count extra time.
Use Poles or any strong sticks while hiking
If you think hiking poles can only be used when going uphill, you are completely wrong. When you descend from the mountain, it will be a lifesaver. Mostly it will help you on the slippery road and slow your walking speed. I used a strong stick that I found below the mountain.
Choose the best Trekking Shoes
As you want to make the trip during the monsoon season, you have to choose accordingly. Otherwise, your shoe might tear or slip. Here are some points that you can keep in mind while choosing:
- A shoe pair that will dry quickly or don’t need to dry
- Strong and have a good sole
- Soft and lite
Take 2-3 pairs of socks
I had two pairs of socks which I change after rain stops to keep my leg dry. My Shoe was made of plastic and rubber material I think. During my trip, almost 70% of the day was rainy. If you take one pair, your feet will always keep wet. And that will feel cold and boring.
Be Aware of Leech and Snake
I got attacked by Leech in the morning. I just wake up and wear my shoes without socks and go out to take photos and videos of the landscape, that time somehow it gets on my leg. So be aware of Leeches, Snakes and other insects. Always watch your step and monitor your body to stay safe.
Sometimes you might need to Avoid trail
I mentioned this because I faced this situation. The trail we were following was not completely good. Because of too much rain, some parts of the trail were damaged and some became slippery. So we had to avoid the trail and move to the forest where trees helped us to climb.
Pack lite
You know hiking to the mountains during monsoon season is too risky. So try to pack what you think you will definitely need. One extra Kilogram will become a 10 Kilogram at the end as you will go uphill. Trust me, you will regrate for an extra gram.
How to prepare a tent for monsoon comping?
First, select a waterproof tent and then choose a place where water won’t flow. Make sure the place is clean or clean by yourself. Another thing you might need is a met. My tent had a leakage and water came into the tent. That was so disgusting!
Take extra plastic bags
Although it’s not eco-friendly but you will need some plastic bags to keep your wet clothes separate from others. Take them with you, don’t throw plastics anywhere.
